The Posture Issue

Your problem could be that simple!

From birth, we all develop in the same manner but life affects each of us differently. From exploring how our body moves as an infant, to regular daily habits and patterns as a child up to an adult, these all directly affect our posture. The Webster's definition of posture is "the position of a person's body when standing or sitting," the medical definition includes "the attitude of the body." We'll use this definition to keep it simple.

Posture is how you hold yourself, and is the attitude of the body. It can tell a lot about a person. Whether they're excited, accepting, tired, uptight, stressed, angry, it shows in your body, and reflects within. It can even reveal strong and weak areas of your musculature, bad postural habits, and can even show your true character.

Now that you know what posture is, let's talk about how it affects you. As I stated earlier, we all develop with the same bones and muscles, nerves and veins. Each artistically and masterfully put in its place to allow optimal flows of energy through the body to allow movement without pain and life at ease. Even minor distortions in this well-executed design can cause a domino effect of aches, pains, and diseases which change the way you feel, which affects your attitude. When a muscle imbalance pulls one of your joints out of position, this puts a strain on that joint. When that strain stresses the nerves around the joint, you feel pain. If your body readjusts itself to ease the pain, other sets of muscles can become imbalanced – and the cycle can continue. A small, local problem in some muscles can become a neuro-muscular-skeletal problem that affects distant parts of your body, even the way your brain received messages.

If you didn't know, as a massage therapist, I manipulate soft tissue (muscles, fascia, connective tissue). My job is not just to allow you time to relax, but also to leave you better than when you came in. During a Restoration Massage session, we do an assessment, check posture, do a strength test or so just to gain an understanding of where you pain is coming from, not just where you feel it (90 percent of the time, the pain is referring from a dysfunction elsewhere in the body).

Unless you've already broken a few bones, or had a few surgeries or other major injuries, most likely your pain problem is something as simple as the way you sit at your computer, the way you run or do push ups, or the way your body settles into itself.

Regular therapeutic massage sessions have been proven to decrease the pain from, and even diminish postural dysfunctions. Please do understand though, it took months, sometimes years or a lifetime for your body to work into the way it is now. Miracles are possible, but I cannot usually fix someone in an hour. Regular sessions as well as at home exercises are critical to long-lasting pain relief. Schedule your appointment today!!

Chair Massage

I also offer on-site chair massage! Break rooms, conference rooms, empty cubicles - anywhere where you can send your employee for a few minutes of relaxing Chair Massage Therapy, will be perfect! This comes at a flat rate of only $75/ hour!

Heavy is the Head...

This is a perfect example of what poor posture can to do someone. The human head weighs an average of about 12 pounds. With even a slight tilt of the head forward, this almost triples the weight of the head adding immense amounts of tension to the upper back and severely weakening the muscles of the front of the neck and chest, even the abdominal muscles and eventually straining the low back as well. Imagine carrying an extra 20 pounds around your neck. This is a common effect of poor posture.

What I've been up to...

I am now a Nationally Certified Prenatal Massage Therapist. Prenatal Massage during pregnancy is a wonderful choice to add to your prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Also to relieve many of the discomforts normally experienced during pregnancy such as backaches, hip pains, stiff neck, leg cramps and swelling.

Prenatal and Thai massage were my passions in Massage School and still are! I am now a certified Thai/Yoga Massage Practitioner! Not quite to the floor work yet, but even still, this assisted yoga postural work is amazing!!

Just some things to help you along in your day...

To help you to better understand where you are and how you move within your own body, I highly recommend everyone take at least one yoga class (or a Restoration Session with me!). Real people are better than videos because nothing beats a real person telling you when your elbows are facing the wrong way, or when you need to protect your neck. For those self-aware people, this may be a little easier for you. Here's a little additional instruction on this awesome pose called 5 Anchors that helps you to bring your body into its correct posture.

1. Stand evenly on your feet shoulder width apart and lightly on your feet.. Bring your chin down as far to your chest as it goes and touch that spot on your chest and bring your head back up. That point your touching is what you are to raise upwards about 2 inches allowing your head to fall back and sit squarely on your shoulders. Place each fingertip to its opposite, palms touching.

2. Feel this move opening your chest. If you don't feel it, move your shoulders around until you do. You can spread you fingers further while keeping contact here also, its great for your hands.

3. And engage the abdominal muscles to tuck in the waist to help bring the pubic bone forward. Bend your knees a little if you have to.

4. and 5. I think you'll get those, but remember to keep the face and jaw relaxed.

I'll take a real picture one day, but until then this will do :)

Thank you all for your continued love and support. I couldn't have done this without you!! This newsletter is my thanks to you. A little bit of information can go a long way- A session with me can go even further!

Please don't hesitate to follow me on social media, to ask questions, give opinions and please do forward this to anyone you know who may be interested!

Peace and Blessings and hope to hear from you soon!
